ONE WORD 5G Mobile Network Pilot Project (WL)

 

 

The Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT) put out an Open Networks Ecosystem (ONE) funding call in March 2023. The ONE fund was developed in order to tackle key barriers to the adoption of open mobile networks: with trials in areas of high demand, and to allow for development of new Open Radio Access Network (Open RAN) software and hardware solutions to improve performance of these networks.

The ONE WORD 5G Mobile Network Pilot aims to improve connectivity and boost the local economy as a result of providing a new cutting-edge mobile network directly in the historic centre of Bath.

Consultation process

The residents Voicebox survey conducted by the Council has provided evidence that a significant proportion of residents cite connectivity issues as a barrier to accessing services online. As a result, B&NES Council has proactively sought funding and opportunities to improve connectivity for residents in the district.
The ONE WORD project is still waiting for a Grant Offer Letter, but once this is received there will be recruitment of a project co-ordinator role who will lead on engagement and communications on a day-to-day basis.
Prior to the co-ordinator role being recruited into the Business & Skills Team, we will ensure local partners, business groups and residents are consulted once the grant offer letter is signed.
A planning application will be submitted for the installation of the new mobile network, with associated consultation for local residents.
