Decision details

Proposed Kingsmead Square Cycle Link, Bath

Decision Maker: Cabinet

Decision status: Approved

Is Key decision?: No

Is subject to call in?: Yes

Purpose:

The proposal is to convert a section of footway across Kingsmead Square to a cycle track between Monmouth Street and the highway on the square.  This would allow it to be used by cyclists and pedestrians.

Decision:

(1) To AGREE that the footway between Monmouth Street and Kingsmead Square is converted to a cycle track, together with a clearly defined pedestrian route across Monmouth Street and future consideration to include a raised table.

Reasons for the decision:

The rationale of this scheme is to encourage more people to cycle rather than using cars. It will provide a more direct route for cyclists where currently cyclists have to use a longer route or cycle illegally across Kingsmead Square. It constitutes an important link in Bath Strategic Cycle Network. If cyclists are forced to use a more circuitous route it could be a deterrent to cycle use.  At the same time, the safety of pedestrians is being protected by clearly defining the pedestrian route.

Alternative options considered:

The only other option for Kingsmead Square would be to do nothing, however, this makes it potentially more hazardous for pedestrians as they may not expect to encounter cyclist and cyclists are likely to use a number of routes across the square again making it more hazardous for all users.
