Toucan Crossing Newbridge Road

Decision Maker: Director of Place Management

Decision status: Approved

Is Key decision?: No

Is subject to call in?: No

Purpose:

The CRSTS Bath to Bristol Strategic Corridor (BBSC) project includes a toucan crossing at the Newbridge Road/ Old Newbridge Hill junction. Early delivery of this crossing is proposed to be carried out by B&NES with the MCA (Mayoral Combined Authority) supporting this early delivery. The crossing is proposed to be constructed in August 2025 (during the summer holidays to limit impact on the A4), with Volker’s carrying this out under the B&NES/ Volker’s term highway maintenance and improvement works contract. Capital funding for this is provided by the MCA to B&NES.

Decision:

To fully approve the transfer of capital funding of £205,541 from the MCA to enable early delivery of the toucan crossing on Newbridge Road by B&NES during August 2025. This is fully funded by DfT grant awarded from the MCA.

Alternative options considered:

To not proceed with the construction of the toucan crossing until it is delivered by the MCA as part of the BBSC in 2026/27. This would delay the introduction of Active travel and safety benefits at this location.
