Review of Hackney Carriage Tariff Rates

Decision Maker: Cabinet Member - Development and Neighbourhoods

Decision status: Approved

Is Key decision?: Yes

Is subject to call in?: Yes

Purpose:

To review the Hackney Carriage rates charged within the Bath and North East Somerset area for time and distance.

Decision:

The Cabinet Member for Neighbourhoods and Development is asked to approve a 4.9% increase in the current hackney carriage tariff rates.

Reasons for the decision:

In determining the proposed increase in the tariff rate, the percentage increase in the cost of owning a vehicle and the percentage increase of wages since the last increase has been considered, through information provided by the Office for National Statistics.

The fact that the tariff rate has not been increased since 2014 was also considered.

The Consumer Price Inflation data set published by the Office of National Statistics indicates that the inflation cost on motoring has increased 8.1% in the last year.  The Council’s policy is to take half of this increase and add half the increase in average earnings (0.85%) to get the recommended fare increase of 4.9%.

Alternative options considered:

The option of no increase in the tariff rate was considered but rejected as the tariff had not been increased since 2014 and the cost of running a vehicle has increased since that time.
