Adaptions to Roads with Existing 20mph Speed Limits

Decision Maker: Cabinet Member - Transport

Decision status: Approved

Is Key decision?: Yes

Is subject to call in?: Yes

Purpose:

Proposed installation of speed tables into existing 20mph zones in various locations of the B&NES urban area.

Decision:

The Cabinet Member agrees with the order to provide raised tables, at the following locations only:-

Englishcombe Lane

·  west of Stirtingale Road;

·  east of Oak Avenue;

·  west of Englishcombe Way;

·  west of Westfield Close.

St Ladoc Road, Keynsham

·  north of Culvers Road;

·  south of St Annes Avenue.

Reasons for the decision:

Raised tables have been considered at the above locations, as they are felt appropriate as a means of traffic calming to reduce vehicle speeds to a level that complies with the Council’s acceptance criteria for 20mph speed limits.  They have also received political and public support for their implementation.

Orchard Way, Peasedown St John has not been considered as there was only limited political and public support.

Weston Park, Bath was also not considered because of a lack of support from Ward Members, noise intrusion, difficulties for ambulance travel to the Royal United Hospital, and less costly alternatives to traffic slowing at the junction of Weston Park and Weston Lane.

Alternative options considered:

The option of implementing build-outs with ‘give and take’ priorities was considered, but felt that they would inhibit traffic flow.
