Decision details
Shared Use Footways - Churchill Gyratory, Bath
Decision Maker: Cabinet Single-Member Decision
Decision status: Approved
Is Key decision?: No
Is subject to call in?: Yes
Purpose:
Conversion of existing footways to shared us paths for pedestrians and cyclists
Decision:
The Cabinet Member agrees that the relevant footways are converted to cycle tracks. The proposals will only be introduced if a Deed of Declaration of Cycle Track is also put in place covering a section of the Authority’s owned land along footpath BQ60 which links to the proposals and forms part of the proposed route. The Deed of Declaration is being dealt with separately. The conversion will be reviewed 12 months from the date of implementation because the pedestrian count identified heavy footfall in the Churchill Bridge area.
Reasons for the decision:
The rationale of this scheme is to encourage more people to cycle rather than using cars. It will provide an alternative route to the busy carriageway. It constitutes an important link in Bath Strategic Cycle Network. If cyclists are forced to use a more circuitous and/or hazardous route it can be a deterrent to cycle use.
Alternative options considered:
No other options were considered for Churchill Gyratory as other options would be prohibitively expensive.
