Monitoring of Targets and Indicators to Achieve the Five Outcomes

These tables list the performance indicators to monitor the progress in achieving the 5 outcomes for children & young people. This list will be developed and monitored within the monitoring and review arrangements within this Plan.

Physically healthy

Infant mortality rate (DH)

Reduce health inequalities by 10% by 2010 as measured by infant mortality and life expectancy at birth.

Starting with children under one year, by 2010 to reduce by at least 10% the gap in mortality between 93routine and manual94 groups and the population as a whole.

Smoking during pregnancy (PSA06a)

A 1 percentage point annual reduction in the proportion of women known to be smokers at the time of delivery as a percentage of total maternities. The percentage of women whose smoking status is not known should be less than 5%,

Breastfeeding initiation rates (PSA06b)

A 2 percentage point annual increase in the proportion of new mothers who initiate breastfeeding as a proportion of all maternities. the percentage whose breastfeeding initiation status is now known should also be less than 5%
