Stop Drones Event at Assembly Rooms
We the undersigned petition the council to cancel its letting of Bath’s Assembly Rooms to Clarion Defence and Security Systems for a June conference and exhibition on drones and supporting systems – mainly for the military purpose of delivering death by remote control. We ask the Council to hold a full and formal public debate, at the earliest opportunity, on this use of one of its most iconic and beautiful public buildings for this purpose, which would make local citizens complicit in a particularly ugly aspect of the arms race and arms trade.
Bath Stop War Coalition wish to stop the conference and exhibition booked for June 25th – 28th in Bath’s historic Assembly Rooms to promote and market unmanned aerial vehicles, otherwise known as drones. The event is billed as covering military and civilian use of drones, but it is clear from the organisers’ website that its overriding purpose is military. In recent years there has been a huge increase in the military use of drones in state surveillance and bombing in Afghanistan, Pakistan, the Middle East and North Africa; they are widely implicated in terrible civilian casualties and in extra-judicial killings (executions). Specialist conferences for drones procurement represent rich opportunities to profit from suffering: we don’t think there should be such a conference here in Bath. We believe the event will be seen as an outrage by its electorate, making the Council complicit in encouraging this sinister new direction for the arms race and arms trade. Such events are an affront to human decency.
